TRY A TRADE – Skills to Schools Roadshow

Try a Trade School RoadshowThe Try a Trade - Skills to Schools Roadshow is a unique initiative to raise the profile of traditional trades, address skills shortages in the region and connect young people to their future careers.

Try a Trade is a unique concept which brings local businesses, schools and young people together. The national skills shortage means future Tradespeople will be in demand in years to come and this initiative aims to train and keep skilled young people in our region.” said Central West Group Apprentices CEO Ben Bardon.

Try a Trade allows students to have an interactive hands-on experience at various skill and trade areas. Each event consists of up to eight separate booths, each one dedicated for a particular trade or occupation. Interested students, in groups of 2 or 3 will spend 15 to 20 minutes in each area.

Try a Trade NSWThe displays are entertaining, informative and allow students to talk with local tradespeople, apprentices and TAFE teachers who volunteer their time to be involved. This motivates students to seek information about future career choices, encouraging them to gain the best possible school education to enable them to have that choice.

“Try a Trade is an industry funded initiative and involves hundreds of local volunteers and businesses across the region. By investing in the promotion of trades, it demonstrates the commitment local industry has to easing the skills shortage.” Mr Bardon said.

Trade SchoolWhilst university has been a preferred career path for many young people, over 30% drop out in their first year. With 30% of Australia’s skilled tradespeople in the pre-retirement window, a trade career can offer many opportunities and rewards without any HECS debt.

The Try a Trade travels in a self contained large heavy duty truck and the industry booths are set up around the vehicle during the event. The roadshows are co-ordinated by Central West Group Apprentices and will be held at 40 High schools throughout the Central West this year with no fee being charged to the school.
